Lycra, also known as spandex, is a durable-knit synthetic fabric. Because of its high elasticity, it is also commonly referred to as elastane or synthetic elastic material. It has a good stretch recovery as it can stretch up to six times its original length and return to its original state again. Lycra is also exceptionally lightweight, thus making it suitable for sportswear like jerseys, cycling shorts, leggings, etc.
However, unlike most synthetic fabrics, it doesn't trap heat and moisture, making it highly breathable for the wearer. The moisture-wicking nature helps remove the sweat from the surface of the body. Also, the clothes made out of lycra are often blended with other fabrics like cotton, making them even more comfortable and high quality.
